What’s the difference between a wool hat and a beanie?

There isn’t a big difference. Beanie is the name of a particular hat shape. The term comes from American English—“bean” was around 1900 a slang word for “head.” Loosely translated, beanie means “made for the head.”

Originally, the word referred to small, close-fitting caps worn by school pupils and college freshmen, often with a small button on top. Over time the meaning shifted to today’s familiar shape: a soft, brimless knit hat that covers the forehead and ears. In the UK you’ll often see “beanie hat.”

For us, beanie simply means the classic knit hat—close-fitting or slightly slouchy, but always without a brim.

Which hat suits my face shape?
